Inpatient programs

If you’re 18 years and above, living with a mental health condition, or alcohol or other drug addiction and need more intensive support, an inpatient program at The Sydney Clinic may be suitable for you.

What do we treat?

The Sydney Clinic offers an inpatient stay and treatment for people who need support in the following areas:

  •  Depressive disorders
  •  Anxiety disorders
  •  Bipolar disorder
  •  Personality disorders
  • Obsessive Compulsive Disorder
  • Schizophrenia and psychosis
  • Trauma and PTSD
  • Alcohol or other drug dependence

As a registered mental health facility, we can also support people with a dual diagnosis of a mental health condition and alcohol or other drug addiction.

What does an inpatient stay involve?

An inpatient program involves a stay in hospital where you’ll receive round-the-clock care, time away from your usual living situation and the space and support you need to focus on your recovery.

For some, this can seem daunting, however our friendly, expert team will welcome you on arrival and ensure that you feel safe and supported throughout your stay.

The Sydney Clinic offers a range of mental health and addiction inpatient programs with care tailored to your needs. Our evidence-based inpatient programs include one-to-one and group-based therapy delivered by qualified, skilled mental health professionals.

In general, our group therapy is based on a range of therapy modalities including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT). Group therapy also provides you with the opportunity to spend time with other people that may have had similar experiences and understand what you’ve been going through.

Depending on your needs, your psychiatrist may also recommend other inpatient treatments including Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT).

How does The Sydney Clinic inpatient program help people with addiction?

Before commencing our inpatient program for alcohol and other drug addiction, we generally encourage you to undertake medically supervised detoxification at The Sydney Clinic.

Medically supervised detoxification helps you ease off alcohol, drugs and substances in a supported and controlled environment. You’ll be supervised and guided by a psychiatrist and a team of experienced medical experts. You’ll receive clinical, psychological and medication support to reduce the risk of – and help relieve the symptoms of – alcohol, drug and substance withdrawal.

Our evidence-based inpatient program then helps you to gain insight into why you developed an alcohol or drug addiction by focusing on underlying behavioural and psychological factors. You’ll learn about the stages of change, what motivates you to change, and how to take responsibility for your recovery. You’ll develop skills in regulating emotion, tolerating distress, interpersonal communication, preventing relapse and managing urges and cravings.
